The main aim of the course is to consolidate prior learning and to build up confidence in speaking. We will deal with new grammar points as they arise but the focus will be on developing conversational skills.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Life in Spain under Franco and life in Spain post – Franco: Spain in the 80’s
  • Using the imperfect tense to describe what life used to be like and compare with life now
  • Comparing the different uses of the Imperfect tense and the Preterite tenses
  • The Pluperfect tense
  • Talking about important historical events
  • Various media: TV, cinema, the theatre
  • Key figures of Spanish cinema

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Talk about life in the past and compare with life today
  • Talk about how people or places have changed
  • Talk about changes in one’s own life: childhood, teenage years, etc.
  • Narrate past events – the different uses of the preterite and imperfect tenses
  • Talk about various media: TV, cinema, the theatre, narrate a story or anecdote, and give opinions
  • Talk about what had happened – the Pluperfect tense

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

The emphasis is on learning through communication, though grammar points will also be taught as appropriate. Teaching will be done through whole class work, individual work and small group and pair work. Methods of learning include role play, listening activities, games, music and interactive activities.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course is suitable for students who have already studied at least 2 years of Spanish and is not suitable for complete beginners. You must be familiar witht he present tense and main past and future tenses.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

Progress is checked informally through questioning and answering sessions in class, monitoring of group and pair work activities, feedback and homework.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

You will make greater progress if you do at least one hour of study at home inbetween classes!


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

We will not be using a textbook for this course. The tutor will provide handouts, but can advise regarding grammar textbooks, online activities, etc.
