During his 10 week course will study one film per week, watching clips to generate discussion about character, plot, symbolism and film craft. The course is suitable for anyone who has a basic conversational grasp vocabulary and grammar and would like to improve their vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation as well as their ability to critique film. Clips from the films will be shown in Spanish with Spanish subtitles and activities and discussions will be entirely in Spanish. You will be sent a list of the films to be studied before the course starts so you can watch the full film before the class

COURSE CONTENT

The course will include a critical overview of the role filmmakers from varied backgrounds have taken in interpreting contemporary Spanish culture and society. By analyzing Spanish cinema from the last half-century, with a particular emphasis on the last decades, we will explore such questions as The Spanish Civil War, Franco's Regime, the transition to democracy, women’s roles in contemporary society, among other themes. It will not only take a specific linguistic approach, but also cultural, sociological, and political forces that have inspired such films.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • You will build your confidence to speak and communicate in a more elaborate way, being able to express ideas/opinions on specific matters in a more coherent and cohesive manner.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

  • Is taught entirely in Spanish, with clarifications in English.
  • Is structured around watching a weekly film in Spanish.
  • Requires students to write a weekly essay and to actively participate in class discussions.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This is not suitable for absolute beginners.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

By listening and reading the subtitles at the same time, you will become much more familiar with the "Sound of the Spanish language", even without realizing it. You will be given oral feedback and encouraged to reformulate taking into account this feedback.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Take note of the linguistic, cultural and cinematographic aspects that we find interesting to comment on.
