Need GCSE English? Then take action now. This 10 week course starts in April and aims to develop learners’ skills in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Successful learners will be guaranteed progression onto GCSE English Language in September 2017.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • This course aims to develop learners’ skills in reading, writing, and speaking and listening in order to progress to GCSE English.
  • Develop spelling, grammar and punctuation in English in order to write more effectively.
  • Discuss and present ideas while working with others.
  • Read complete texts for better understanding and to develop vocabulary and understanding of language techniques.
  • Complete research and writing tasks to form a portfolio of work.

  • COURSE CONTENT

    Course includes spelling, grammar and punctuation to aid more effective writing of documents.

    Reading two whole books for discussion and analysis.

    Using resources on our online Moodle site for self-development

    Required completion of reading and portfolio tasks for progression to GCSE.


    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    Teaching will include whole class teaching and individual learning. The use of computers will be integral to the course, but learners will also complete worksheets and handwritten tasks. Pair work and group work, as well as individual activities, will form part of the class.


    COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Functional Skills English at Level 1 or GCSE English Language at Grade D or college based assessment using BKSB online assessment at Level 2.


    HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

    A portfolio of coursework will be completed and learning will also be checked during the class. Learners will also complete one to one tutorials with the tutor to discuss progress.


    EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

    Learners will need to read independently and completion of coursework tasks will be required at home, which will require the use of a computer and printer. Distance learning hours, or attendance at Saturday workshops, will also need to be evidenced so good personal commitment is essential.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    Pens, pencils, A4 lined paper, highlighter pens, English dictionary, plus at least two books in paper based or electronic (eg Kindle) format.

    Successful learners will be guaranteed progression onto GCSE English Language.
