This course will be conducted online with access to hand-outs, cheat sheets, assignments and Powerpoint presentations, as well as one to one time, online, with the tutor.

This is ideal for beginners, anyone with an interest in photography, and a DSLR camera that they want to get to know better.

The course will teach photography techniques, camera functions but mostly will focus on creativity. An ideal opportunity to get creative while stuck at home. Short projects will be set, all with instruction, to inspire your creativity, teach you how to see photographically, and experience your surroundings, home and garden, pets and family in new way.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Develop your photo skills and improve you creative photography in a fun, informative and interesting way.
  • Get to understand the creative potential of Program Mode.
  • Discover the effects of lens Apertures
  • Discover the effects of shutter speeds on pictures.
  • Greatly improve composition
  • Discover the creative potential of your camera such as using creative filters.
  • COURSE CONTENT

    Projects will include, still life photography, light painting, food photography, portraiture, and abstract photography.

    We will also get inspiration from some of the masters of photography!

    There will be group learning to and the opportunity to share images with your peers and learn from each other.


    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    The course will be delivered online. A web virtual classroom presentation will be give for 1 hour with a further 30 mins for Q and A. Slots will then be booked for students to have a 10 to 15 minute one to one with the tutor as required. All hands outs, cheat sheetsand presentations will be made available online.


    COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    No entry requirements.


    HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

    Learners will be encouraged to keep a learner diary and a folio of their images. This can be done digitally and via the PACA Moodle website.

    You will also get constructive and encouraging feedback on progress from the tutor and peers.


    EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

    Assignments will be given for students to practise their new skills and engage with photography as a hobby. Assignments will be reviewed in online in a safe and positive environment for students to learn from, and be able to encourage each other’s progress.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    A Dslr camera, memory card, fully charged battery, note pad and pen.


    WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

    There is a further course, Introduction to Dslr Photography 3 which will progress from this course, with lots of great creative photography tutorials, techniques and projects.

    At the end of each term there will also be a one day workshop in Digital Photo-editing for students that wish to learn how to edit their images from the course and even make a print of their favourite image!

  • Get off auto mode and making friends with your mode dial
  • Improve focusing and composition
  • Use of in camera creative filters such as shooting in Black and White
  • Use of aperture and the shutter to make creative picture outcomes

    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    There will be tutor-led tutorials and hands-on practical exercises throughout the course with plenty of time allowed for you to explore and experiment. There will also be the opportunity for group discussions about a variety of photography topics and all subjects taught throughout the course will be supported by presentations, demonstrations and hand-outs. There will also be the opportunity to have lessons on location and hone your skills photographing Brighton Pier and Coast Line and the south downs among other locations.

    A tripod would be ideal, but if not owned, advice will be given over the duration of the course.

    Feel free to bring any extra lenses and filters that you may wish learn about.
