Introduction to Print Making

This is an exciting course which will enable you to gain experience of and explore different printmaking techniques. This will include Monoprinting and Relief printmaking, including – Lino cuts, foam block, collography and wood cut. You will get the chance to produce your own individual prints in a fun and supportive environment. You will need to supply the tools to start off, this would be about £20 and would include cutting tools, roller, and basic inks and a printing plate.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • To Learn and develop printmaking skills
  • Learn and develop the skills involved in monoprinting,relief and intaglio printing
  • Explore your own ideas and learn how to create a print from initial sketches to the final image.
  • Increase your use of sketchbooks for exploring ideas.
  • Gain some knowledge of the history of printmaking.
  • COURSE CONTENT

    You will be introduced to the printmaking processes, including mono print, relief and intaglio printing.

    You will get a chance to develop existing printmaking skills through personal projects and exploration of you own printmaking practice.

    We will look at the ways to develop sketches and initial ideas into finished prints.

    We will also explore projects such as limited print runs and producing prints to a narrative.

  • Learn the techniques involved in Mono and Relief printing
  • Develop your own visual ideas and means of expression
  • To be encouraged to record discoveries and observations about printmaking through sketchbook work
  • To learn about the history of printmaking.

    You will learn a variety of printmaking processes through a series of projects and experiments.

    We will start by learning how to choose visual sources, practising observed or expressive drawing and learn how to design and extend your ideas into printed images.

    A Sketchbook will be kept by all students in which they can explore ideas for prints, experiment and plan/design images for the printing process.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    You will need some basic cutting tools, for Lino printing and some relief printing ink and paper. Also some lino plates. And paper, pencils.

    These tools can be bought as a kit at some art shops, ie Cass Arts do a basic kit for Lino printing.

    We will discuss any other equipment needed throughout the course.
