Guitar for beginners at at Portslade Adult Learning

Intermediate Guitar is designed for students who have completed the Improvers Guitar Course. Students joining this course should be able to play all open position chords, play a basic finger picking pattern and confidently strum a variety of rhythms. They should also be able to read tablature and have some basic knowledge of music theory and know the names of the notes on the fretboard. In this course we will extend our repertoire of songs (mainly popular, folk and blues pieces) and start to introduce some barre chords and power chords into our playing. We will also learn more scales which will help improvisation and technique.

COURSE CONTENT

• Scales ( moveable blues scales ).
• Learning more popular songs in different styles ( Folk, Blues and Rock ).
• Playing together as a group and also solo pieces.
• Learning rhythm and lead guitar.
• Becoming more confident with different rhythms.
• Learning how to play Barre chords and Power Chords.
• Learning basic music theory and knowledge of notes on the fretboard.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Understand how movable Barre Chords and Power Chords work and know how to play them.
  • Play a repertoire of popular songs and solo tab pieces.
  • Understand how the fretboard works and be able to locate all major and minor chords.
  • Play more complex strumming patterns and develop confident fingerpicking skills.
  • Play a variety of scales useful for building technique and improvisation/ lead guitar.
  • Read and play tab.

COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Intermediate Guitar is designed for students who have completed the Improvers Guitar Course or have been playing the guitar for up to five months. Students joining this course should be able to play all open position chords, play a basic finger picking pattern and confidently strum a variety of rhythms and songs. They should also be able to read and play tablature.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

– Revisiting earlier pieces to check learning
– Weekly recap of previous lesson.
– Discussion and feedback.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Practising at home is essential for progression.


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Guitar, folder, notebook and pen. A guitar tuner and plectrum are recommended but not essential.
