Guitar for beginners at at Portslade Adult Learning

This course is designed for students who have completed the ten week Guitar for Beginners Course but is also open to new guitarists that have been playing guitar for a couple of months and would like to take their playing to the next level. Students who want to sign up for this Improvers Course should be able to understand how to read tab and chord diagrams, be able to play all open chord
positions and strum a few basic rhythm patterns. In the Improvers Course we will extend our repertoire, learning to play many more popular songs, improve our rhythm playing and learn how to fingerpick. Effective practise skills and fingerboard technique will be taught. We will also learn to play some scales and how to improvise. The style of music we will be playing is pop, rock and folk music.

COURSE CONTENT

• Learning some major/minor and blues scales.
• Playing classic popular songs.
• Learning more rhythm guitar patterns and fingerpicking.
• Playing together as a group and also solo pieces.
• Improvisation sessions.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Practice effectively and refine fingerboard technique.
  • Play many new songs.
  • Finger pick and strum rhythm patterns more confidently.
  • Play a few scales useful for building technique and improvisation/ lead guitar.
  • Read and play tablature pieces.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

  • Group activities.
  • Repetition and weekly re-cap.
  • Individual help from tutor.
  • Feedback.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students must have completed the Guitar For Beginners Course or have a good knowledge of open position major and minor chords.Students should be able to play a few simple strumming patterns and be able to read / play basic tablature.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

  • Revisiting earlier pieces to check learning.
  • Weekly recap of past lesson.
  • Discussion and feedback.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Practice of guitar at home between lessons is essential.


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Please bring a guitar, folder, notebook and pen. A guitar tuner and plectrum are recommended but not essential.
