These qualifications are needed for many jobs, apprenticeships and university courses. You will study modules in reading, writing and speaking and listening and you will take formal assessments in all 3 components. This is an ideal course to do before progressing on to higher levels of Functional Skills.  Entry requirements: completion of Foundation Skills English or by college based assessment.

COURSE CONTENT

Course includes spelling, grammar and punctuation to aid more effective writing of documents, particularly relating to employment.

Development of IT skills to write emails and use websites.

Reading a variety of texts for comprehension.

Using resources on our online Moodle site for self-development

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • This course aims to develop learners’ skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English to improve their employability
  • Complete documents relating to job applications
  • Develop spelling, grammar and punctuation in English to write more effectively
  • Discuss ideas while working with others
  • Develop writing using a computer
  • Read for better understanding and to improve vocabulary

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

Teaching will include whole class teaching and individual learning. The use of computers will be integral to the course, but learners will also complete worksheets and handwritten tasks. Pair work and group work, as well as individual activities, will form part of the class, with a focus on working with others as preparation for employment


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Functional Skills English at Entry 2 or by college-based assessment achieving Entry 2 or above. Non native speakers of English should complete ESOL Level 1 first.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

A portfolio of coursework will be completed and learning will also be checked during the class. Learners will also complete one to one tutorials with the tutor to discuss progress.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Learners will need to read independently, and completion of coursework tasks will be required at home, which may require the use of a computer and printer. Those learners without their own computer may access college computers at set times.


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Pens, pencils, A4 lined paper, highlighter pens, English dictionary, small notebook for vocabulary.


WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful learners will progress onto higher level Functional Skills English programmes.
