Creative Writing courses at Portslade Adult Learning

A class where more experienced writers can share their work and develop their skills in a supportive atmosphere. Students are welcome to work on longer projects, or to engage with the weekly writing tasks. Learners will share their writing and discuss strengths and areas for development in their own and other group members work.
The Summer term will focus on exploring techniques used by published writers. All classes will involve sharing and discussing learners’ own writing.

COURSE CONTENT

A wide ranging and imaginative course covering fiction, poetry and autobiography that will allow students to explore their own writing in greater depth. Reading and discussing the work of a range of writers for inspiration, we will experiment with a range of techniques

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

Work towards developing your own unique voice.
Read and discuss the work of published writers.
For those interested in exploring the possibility of publication, you will gain an understanding of how the market operates and we will explore together self publishing opportunities.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

Class exercises.
Small group and whole class discussion.
Sharing work in progress.

Regular optional assignments will be set to be completed at home but you will still get a lot out of the class even if your time to write is limited.

COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Suitable for students who have attended previous writing courses or who have been writing on their own for some time and are keen to join with other writers in a supportive and encouraging environment.

HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor, taking into account class work and homework where appropriate. The tutor will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course and written feedback on one sustained piece of work,

EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Regular homework assignments will be set but you will still get a lot out of the course if your ability to write outside the class is limited.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Just a pen and notebook, but access to email and word processing is essential for a writer and the tutor marked assignment should be sent by email.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This is a course designed to offer continuing support and sources of inspiration to the emerging writer – as such students may wish to continue in the subsequent term knowing that each term will be different, offering new challenges and new opportunities.
