Course members will explore the use of interpersonal skills in the helping relationship, including the importance of empathy and respect. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills will also be developed, as well as an understanding of boundaries and confidentiality.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • To increase self-awareness and support personal development.
  • To raise awareness of the importance of interpersonal skills in enhancing relationships.

  • COURSE CONTENT

    • What is the helping relationship?
    • Use of empathy and respect in interpersonal skills.
    • Questioning and feedback.
    • Verbal and non-verbal communication.
    • How values and beliefs impact the helping relationship.
    • Boundaries and confidentiality.
    • Assessment of own strengths and areas for development.


    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    Tutor input; group practical work; group discussion; individual reflection.


    COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    • Interest in developing own skills to support others.
    • Interest in gaining an introductory insight into counselling roles.
    • No prior experience or qualifications required.
    • Minimum 19 years of age.


    HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

    • A portfolio of evidence will be produced.
    • 85% attendance required.


    EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

    A small amount of additional work will be required between sessions.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    Pen and paper.


    WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

    • This course would support applications to work in caring roles or could enhance existing roles in this sector.
    • Other social science or vocational courses in working with people eg. Customer Service, Deaf Awareness, Adult Social Care, Working with Children, Nutrition and Health, Team Leading, Psychology, Sociology.
    • A Level 2 course in Counselling or related subject.
