You will explore what is meant by mental health as well as common perceptions of mental health and the impact of stereotyping. In addition you will learn about the rights of people with mental health challenges and the support available.

COURSE CONTENT

A clear definition of what is meant by the term Mental Health.

The causes of mental health difficulties.

An understanding of common perceptions of mental health difficulties and how stereotyping can affect people's perceptions of mental health.

An overview of where appropriate support can be sought.

Information about cultural diversity within mental health issues.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Increase awareness and understanding of mental health.
  • Understanding the impact of stereotyping and discrimination.
  • Identify cultural differences in the perception of mental health.
  • Develop knowledge of the rights of those with mental health issues.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used on the course, including group discussions, group exercises, individual work and the use of case studies.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An interest in mental health issues; no previous experience or qualifications are necessary. Coursework requires some written repsonses to structured questions in a workbook.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

Students complete a workbook; written and verbal feedback will be provided by the course tutor.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

The ability to carry out research about mental health issues discussed in the class. Links to relevant websites and a reading list will be provided.
