Art course at Portslade Adult Learning

The course is divided into 2 parts, the first working from Foredown Tower. The first few weeks we will be looking at sketching in a variety of different ways to record scenes on paper and sketch books. We will also be looking at equipment and how to record perspective. In the second half, weather permitting, we will be going out as a group to nearby places that are within reach by public transport. This course will give you confidence to work outside in a public place and develop an understanding of materials and equipment that you need to take with you. We will be sketching in parks or by the sea - you will be told of the rendezvous points before we venture out. In inclement weather we shall be at Foredown tower.

COURSE CONTENT

We will be looking at techniques of applying paint from washes to brushes and other tools that you might like to try.

The subjects that we will possibly be looking at will be seas, hills, skies, trees, rocks, rivers, buildings in a landscape, still life and pictures from your holidays or local scenes.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • To gain confidence in applying washes.
  • Apply a multitude of marks with one brush.
  • Question and plan composition.
  • Look and understand how a watercolour artist has approached a painting.
  • Enjoy and discover new ways of applying paint.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

Each new technique will be demonstrated and this can be repeated at different times during the course.

There will be references to other artists work from books and on line.

Learn from looking at each others work and talkng about the processes.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Some or no knowledge of painting is necessary for this course.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

Each week the tutor will come round and discuss individually with you how you are progressing and at the end of the session there will be an informal group discussion on the processes and progress.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Practising is advisable so to master the techniques.


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Watercolour paint box with a medium sized round brush hair or synthetic for watercolour, a mop brush for applying washes, a natrual sponge, kitchen roll, masking tape, a board slightly larger than the paper to put the paper on ( this could be a place mat or a scrap piece of light MDF) watercolour pad A4 or A3, a sketch pad for notes and practising in which can be cartridge. I will have some paper at the centre that you will be able to buy at around 40p a piece of A3 watercolour paper.


WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

To continue this course into the next term where we will be looking at perfecting these techniques and learning new ones.
