In this two hour class we will be exploring the various techniques of watercolour, developing your unique style and becoming more in tuned with the medium. There will be regular demonstrations throughout the ten weeks. There is always lots of friendly help and advice on hand throughout the duration of the course. Each course covers new themes so that repeat students can enjoy new subjects each time.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Apply good understanding of mixing colours.
  • Use a variety of marks and discuss whether they are right for the painting.
  • Discuss composition.
  • Use washes confidently in a painting.
  • COURSE CONTENT

    We shall go though a series of genres, including still life, landscapes with figures, and architecture.


    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    Demonstrations, internet references and books.


    COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    Some previous experience of painting, either self-taught or from another class.


    HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

    Tutor discussion and and at the end we have a friendly group discussion.


    EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

    Practising at home is advisable.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    Watercolour paint box and a selection of watercolour brushes, watercolour pad and a sketch pad.

    Another course, or continue into next term in order perfect techniques and cover new themes.

  • Apply a multitude of marks with one brush.
  • Question and plan composition.
  • Look and understand how a watercolour artist has approached a painting.
  • Enjoy and discover new ways of applying paint.
  • COURSE CONTENT

    We will be looking at techniques of applying paint from washes to brushes and other tools that you might like to try.

    The subjects that we will possibly be looking at will be seas, hills, skies, trees, rocks, rivers, buildings in a landscape, still life and pictures from your holidays or local scenes.


    TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

    Each new technique will be demonstrated and this can be repeated at different times during the course.

    There will be references to other artists work from books and on line.

    Learn from looking at each others work and talkng about the processes.


    COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    Some or no knowledge of painting is necessary for this course.


    HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

    Each week the tutor will come round and discuss individually with you how you are progressing and at the end of the session there will be an informal group discussion on the processes and progress.


    EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

    Practising is advisable so to master the techniques.


    MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

    Watercolour paint box with a medium sized round brush hair or synthetic for watercolour, a mop brush for applying washes, a natrual sponge, kitchen roll, masking tape, a board slightly larger than the paper to put the paper on ( this could be a place mat or a scrap piece of light MDF) watercolour pad A4 or A3, a sketch pad for notes and practising in which can be cartridge. I will have some paper at the centre that you will be able to buy at around 40p a piece of A3 watercolour paper.


    WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

    To continue this course into the next term where we will be looking at perfecting these techniques and learning new ones.
