This is an exciting and challenging course, suitable for all levels. On this course you will learn how to draw the face (portrait) from photographs and then from life. You will learn how to use different media, including gorgeous chalk pastel, charcoal and ink. You will learn how to capture lighting and tone on the face. You will learn how to use colour creatively and to convey expression.

COURSE CONTENT

Each week you will be using a different medium, the first week you will be using your own photographs as reference.
Six weeks you will be drawing portraiture from life, working from a model, using a spotlight to create interesting lighting on the face.
You will learn how to use tone,colour,form and line effectively to draw the face and to capture expression and mood.

COURSE AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Learn how to draw the face using your own photographs for reference and how to draw the face from life.
  • Learn how to draw the face in proportion.
  • Learn how to create realistic (and experimental) skin tone.
  • Learn how to use a variety of media, including chalk pastel, charcoal, watercolour, ink and coloured pencil.
  • Learn how to choose the right media/paper for the task required.
  • Learn how to draw the face in black and white medium. And in colour medium.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS

Demonstrations by the tutor of different techniques using a variety of media.
One to one tuition.
Using examples of other artists work as inspiration (relevant exhibitions, Moodle).
Learners to take notes during demonstrations if they wish.


COURSE LEVEL/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

None.


HOW PROGRESS IS CHECKED DURING COURSE

Constant evaluation, both by the tutor and peer evaluation.
Group discussion.
One to one tutorials.
Note taking.

Show and discuss work at the end of each session.


EXTRA STUDY OR PRACTICE REQUIRED AT HOME

Homework may be set – possibly researching other artists work. Examples could be brought in the following week and used for inspiration, e.g. Degas=Pastel, Matisse=Ink.


MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE

Set of chalk pastels (12 colours would be a good starting point about £6 ), tutor has sets of 64 Inscribe pastels to purchase for £12 (cost price).
Set of pastel pencils, or three individual pastel pencils will suffice (black,sepia red and dark blue) £1.60 each.
Packet of willow charcoal £3.
White plastic eraser £1.
Masking tape (get from the pound shop).
2 brushes of varying thicknesses ,square ended brushes and pointed brushes (not needed for week one so tutor will advise).
Drawing ink Winsor and Newton black, Indian Ink £3.65 (black watercolour fine if you already have it).
Drawing board if you haven’t got a hardback pad, mdf is perfect.Photographs of loved ones or images torn from magazines – these should be clear, well lit images of faces in colour if possible. A4 size.
A model will be present for 6/7 weeks – the cost for this is included in the enrolment fee.
